So Virtual Reality Development is fun... / by Jacob Shuman

So..I've been quite busy making games and working on a bunch of different projects. That's fun and all, but I've completely ignored my blog.  That is not so fun...I miss writing here so I want to start again.  So what have I been up to for the past two weeks?  Well, you can see the professional development stuff on the rest of my site, but what you won't see is the latest personal project I've started.  So, I recently purchased an HTC vive and I can honestly say it's been a blast playing with it.  The first few days I definitely played a ton of games to get acclimated to the VR gaming style, but after days of throwing things..shooting bows..and shooting guns at soldiers...I found myself adventuring into the development side of the Vive.

Fast forward 4 coffees and hours of exciting frustration, I've built my first sandbox Virtual Reality game.  That was exicting and I might have teared up a bit with how cool it was to step foot in my own VR sanctuary...but I needed more.  A week and several redesigned puzzles later I think I've finally nailed down exactly how I want this "game" to be.  Game? oh...I should probably mention this started as a pure "I want to make this sandbox" kind of a thing, now I'm convinced I should turn this into a game and release it for other VR fans.

A layout + 2 pots of coffee + 3 100% functional environmental puzzles later...I found myself recording audio for the game, why is this so much fun? I  seriously haven't had this much fun designing games since I was in my early days of college learning my first few lines of code.  So, where are we at so far?  I have 3 puzzles that are functional and work as intended and I have some narrator pestering the player all the way thru the game.  This is pretty neat, next I want to see how we can tie all of this together into a pretty great tutorial.
